STAFF PROGRAMS

Teasing is a universal problem, and it cannot be completely prevented. Although children are unable to control the words and actions of the teaser, they can control their reactions to the tease.  Educators and school mental health professionals can be extremely instrumental in helping elementary and junior high school-aged children deal with name-calling, ridicule, and verbal bullying. We must pro-actively teach children coping skills to use in teasing situations, in the same way we teach “stranger danger."  This workshop empowers participants with tools, tips, and practical advice to empower kids.  Types of teasing vs. bullying, reactions to and prolonged effects of teasing, why children tease, the 10 “EASING” strategies, a plan of action for the teaser, and the importance of activating bystanders will be addressed.  Practical suggestions to implement "Easing the Teasing" school-wide and in the classroom will  also be discussed, in addition to working with parents of the teasers and teasees.

The 1 1/2- to 3-hour staff development/in-service training includes:

* Types of teasing vs. bullying
* What kids are teased about
* Reactions to teasing
* Why kids tease
* The 10 strategies
* Suggestions for parents of teasees and teasers
* Suggestions for the school setting
* Questions and answers
