Introduction Some children do not want to go to school because someone is making fun of them in class or during recess. Other children complain that someone in the neighborhood is hurting their feelings. Many children experience stress because of name-calling on the school bus. Unfortunately, teasing occurs everywhere and is difficult to prevent, despite the best efforts of parents, teachers, and school administrators. We cannot always protect children from these hurtful situations, however, we can teach children useful strategies to help them deal with teasing or "ease the tease." These strategies empower children and reduce feelings of helplessness that so many children experience. When young children realize that there are effective responses they can use in teasing situation, their coping skills are strengthened. |
